How to Get Free Grants for College
Your education may be the biggest financial decision you make, and it can be an expense you are stuck repaying for years. But with free grants for college, the cost of education can be covered so you can afford to go to school and graduate debt-free.
Every year the government hands out billions of dollars in financial aid to millions of students. The difference between free grants for college students and traditional student loans is that grant money does not have to be paid back.
With student loans, you are responsible for repaying those funds after you earn your degree or when you are no longer a full time student. Loans also accrue interest, which means you can expect to have to pay them back for a long time after your graduate. Government grants, on the other hand, are provided to students to allow more people the opportunity to got to school while making it affordable. Unless you are caught spending the cash on things other than approved educational expenses (typically including books, tuition and student housing), the government will never ask you to repay the money.
There’s nothing wrong using student loans to help finance your college experience. In fact, student loans have some of the lowest interest rates you can find in any type of personal loan. However, one resource you may want to consider is obtaining free grants for college — particularly when you cannot get approved for a loan.
Let’s say your tuition costs $15,000 a year. Over the four years it takes to earn your degree, that would amount to $60,000 in debt before you even get your first job. But if you have the government reduce some of that cost for you, you can slash the debt you carry after you graduate in half, if not more.
The government, private foundations and special interest groups send checks to millions of college students — many times regardless of income, credit or merit. This is an opportunity that students who need financial aid can consider in order to get the money they need to pay for school.
